Diffusion Lab Conclusion

In science this week, a lab was completed studying diffusion and osmosis. The purpose of this lab was to test a starch with a semi permeable membrane. In this lab, the iodine played the role as the indicator. When the bag, consisting of corn starch and water was but into the beaker of iodine solution and water, After a couple of minutes it turned purple. The iodine by itself was concentrated and when the iodine was mixed with the water, it was diluted. After 5 minutes of the water and iodine was hypertonic and the water and corn starch was hypotonic.


When we put the bag of corn starch and water into the beaker of iodine and water, nothing happened at first. As we waited, and time flew by, we were directed to take the bag out and some things happened. When the bag was removed, the outside of the bag was purple and the corn starch was completely separated from the water. This happened because the bag was semi permeable and the outside turned purple.


Many connections to life involve diffusion. One example is spraying a perfume bottle, as you spray it it spreads out in the air. A second example is putting food coloring in water. As it is dropped in, it spreads out. A third example is using nail polish. When you twist the cap off of the chemicals that were scrunched up are now spreading out and gives that nasty smell. My final example is air freshener. When it is sprayed in the air, it gives the entire are the scent of the bottle. I do use most of these examples in my own life.
